The Hudson Bay Company founded in 1670 for the fur trade in Hudson Bay, is the oldest legal entity in North America and one of of the oldest in the world still in activity. It has always been intimately linked to the history of Canada until July 2008, the moment of its acquisition and direct management by the American company NRDC. Created in London, the Company was nevertheless founded by two French runners of the woods, Pierre-Esprit Radisson and Médard Chouart des Groseillers. After the fall of  New France in 1763, it expanded its network of trading posts to the west and north of what would become Canada .

In the early 1800s, the Hudson's Bay Company competed with the  North West Company of Montreal and the two merged after a bloody conflict for control of furs. It subsequently remained for almost half a century the holder of the largest part of the Canadian territory and of an exclusive right to trade furs. This territory will be given to the new country in 1870 by the government in London. Its trading posts became general stores where Native Americans came to obtain supplies and its representatives were the de facto representatives of the British order in remote communities. She opened departement stores in southern cities and created her own trademarks, including famous striped blankets.
