Following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the end of World War 1, the independent country of Czechoslovakia was created in 1918. The country combined two distinct cultural groups, the Czechs and Slovaks. The Czechs resided in the Bohemia and Moravian areas of the Austro-Hungarian empire. The Hungarian Slovaks in Slovakia.

The creation of Czechoslovakia meant that the Austro-Hungarian ceramic manufacturers located in Bohemia became part of the new nation. The Bohemian towns retained their German names. Following the defeat of the Germans in 1945, the Czechoslovakia government ordered former German nationals to leave the country. German-owned factories were sold to Czech businessmen or nationalized. German town names were replaced by Czech names.
